How to remove stains from furniture and carpets

A stain on the sofa or carpet is no reason to buy new furniture. Most marks come out if you act fast and choose the right product.
The main rule — do not rub
Blot a fresh stain with a napkin from the edges towards the centre, never rub it. Otherwise the dirt sinks deeper into the fibres and spreads.
Match the product to the fabric
For delicate upholstery use a mild soap solution; for sturdy fabrics use a dedicated stain remover. Always test on a hidden area first.
A quick stain cheat sheet
- Coffee and tea: cold water with a little vinegar;
- Grease: sprinkle baking soda, then a mild detergent;
- Wine: blot, cover with salt, then a soapy solution;
- Ink: alcohol applied to a cotton pad.
If the fabric is expensive or the stain is old, don’t experiment: professional dry cleaning will restore the look without the risk of ruining it.
